Sunday morning. I open the issue tracker of a software project.
One of the issues: "Library Y is outdated, you should use library Z".
A dev replies: "Y is still perfectly valid, and it’s the only one that ensures compatibility with other OSes like the BSDs".
Response: "Nobody uses those OSes anymore, and there’s no reason to - we have Linux!"
The dev simply closed the issue.

Another small victory today.

A salesperson had almost convinced a client to move their email from 365 to Google because "they hold all the cards now". I stepped in and suggested they keep their email on servers that they control instead. The salesperson almost mocked me, treating me like a "nerd" who doesn't understand how the world works.

I was happy to be a nerd, if necessary, to explain the pros and cons of the solution to the client.
The result? The salesperson was politely thanked and "sent home", and I'm now evaluating some details of the new mail server, which, by the client's choice, will be based on OpenBSD.

Because people need explanations, not brochures.

In the past few days FediMeteo seemed to be having some performance trouble. I dug into it and only found minor issues, until I realised the VM itself had fallen off a cliff. After several reboots it became clear that both bandwidth and I/O latency had dropped to absurd levels. I suspect the provider slapped a cap on it.

So I took the chance to move everything to another VM and provider, still at 4 euro per month. And starting today, forecasts will be delivered straight from Italy. The performance jump feels like going from a storm to clear skies.

FediMeteo’s mission goes on. More countries are coming (stay tuned!) and we will keep aiming to serve everything from a 4 euro VM. I do have powerful hardware available, but proving that the project can run on tiny resources is still part of the mission.

Upgraded my secondary notebook "Tianve" to GhostBSD 25.02-R14.3p7.

Removed KDE Plasma 6.5.4 and switched to LXQT instead. All is well.

I am running #FreeBSD RELEASE 15.0 with #pkg for package management, no #ports at all. It appeared to me that the Joe's Window Manager port, x11-wm/jwm, was built without #SVG image support by default. However svg files are actually widely used by multiple icon themes, meaning that many of them will not work under #JWM . Should I simply compile it manually out of ports tree? I mean getting the ports tree is not difficult but setting up #poudriere and all just for one package seems tedious. Are there any other simpler waysnto achieve this?
